Precious Metals in a SIMPLE IRA

By the Bullion Beacon Editorial Team · Updated October 31, 2026

A SIMPLE IRA can hold physical precious metals only if it is self-directed with a custodian that supports them, and most workplace SIMPLE IRAs are not. Many people instead move SIMPLE money into a self-directed traditional IRA that holds metals, but the IRS two-year rule controls when that can happen without extra tax.

How SIMPLE Plans Work

A SIMPLE IRA (Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees) is a workplace plan for small employers. According to the IRS, it lets employees defer part of their salary and requires the employer to contribute every year, either by matching employee deferrals up to a set percentage or by making a flat nonelective contribution for every eligible employee. Each employee owns a separate SIMPLE IRA.

The employer usually picks a single financial provider for the plan, which is why most SIMPLE IRAs offer only mutual funds or brokerage options. Employees generally have the right to move their SIMPLE IRA balance to a different SIMPLE IRA provider of their choosing, which is how a self-directed SIMPLE IRA holding metals becomes possible. Annual deferral limits change over time, so check the current numbers on the IRS SIMPLE IRA plan page.

The Two-Year Rule Before Moving Funds to Metals

This is the rule that matters most for anyone thinking about gold or silver. The IRS sets a two-year period that starts on the first day your employer deposited a contribution into your SIMPLE IRA. During those two years:

After the two-year period ends, SIMPLE IRA money can generally be moved to a traditional IRA, as the IRS rollover chart shows. That opens the door to a gold IRA held at a self-directed custodian.

Confirm your two-year start date with your plan provider before requesting any transfer. It is based on the first contribution to your SIMPLE IRA, not on your hire date.

Two Ways to Hold Metals With SIMPLE Money

Option 1: Self-directed SIMPLE account holding metals

You can open a SIMPLE IRA with a self-directed custodian that permits physical metals and transfer your existing SIMPLE balance there, trustee to trustee. Because it stays a SIMPLE IRA, this can be done during the two-year period. The downside is practical: your employer's ongoing contributions usually still go to the plan's chosen provider, so you may need to repeat transfers periodically. Not every self-directed custodian offers SIMPLE IRAs, so ask before you apply.

Option 2: Wait and move to a traditional metals IRA

Once the two years have passed, you can transfer part or all of the balance to a self-directed traditional IRA. This is the more common route and is the same process described in our guide to IRA-to-IRA transfers for precious metals. A partial move lets you keep receiving contributions in the workplace plan while holding a slice of the savings in metal.

What the Metals Must Meet

Whichever account holds the metals, the same Internal Revenue Code section 408(m) rules apply. Gold generally needs to be .995 fine, silver .999, and platinum and palladium .9995, with an exception for American Eagle coins. Collectible coins that fall outside those rules are treated as distributions if bought in the account. The metals must stay with an approved custodian or depository; keeping them at home creates problems we explain in home storage risks.

Questions to Ask Before Starting

  1. When did my first SIMPLE IRA contribution land, and when does my two-year period end?
  2. Does my employer's plan allow transfers out while I am still employed? (Your SIMPLE IRA is yours, but confirm the provider's process.)
  3. Will my custodian accept a SIMPLE IRA, or only traditional and Roth IRAs?
  4. What setup, annual and storage fees apply? See metals IRA fees explained.
  5. How much of the balance do I want in metals versus the funds my plan offers?

Working With a Metals Company

Goldco, a precious metals company, offers gold and silver for precious-metals IRAs funded by transfer or rollover from existing IRAs, 401(k)s and other qualified retirement accounts. It says it works with all major self-directed IRA custodians. Its precious metals specialists can walk through the paperwork, but they are not licensed to give tax or legal advice, so the two-year question is one to confirm with your plan provider and a tax professional. Our how Goldco works page outlines the steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I roll a SIMPLE plan balance into gold right away?

Only into another SIMPLE IRA during the first two years. A move to a traditional metals IRA during that window is treated as a distribution and may face a 25% additional tax if you are under the IRS-defined age.

Does the two-year rule apply to each contribution?

No. The IRS measures it from the first day contributions were deposited into your SIMPLE IRA with that employer, not separately for each deposit.

Can my employer offer gold directly in the plan?

Employers choose the plan provider, and few offer physical metals. Employees can generally move their balance to a SIMPLE IRA provider of their choosing.

Are metals in a SIMPLE plan taxed differently?

No. Growth is tax-deferred like any traditional-style IRA, and distributions are taxed as ordinary income when taken.
