Goldco Minimum Purchase Requirements
Goldco has two minimums: one for precious metals IRAs, which appears in Goldco's published fee statement below, and one for direct (non-IRA) purchases, which its website lists as $10,000, according to Goldco's website at the time of writing; confirm current terms. Both figures can change, so always confirm with the company before you plan around them.
Where Each Minimum Comes From
The two thresholds apply to different kinds of transactions.
- Retirement-account minimum. This applies when you open a self-directed IRA and fund it by transfer or rollover to buy metals through Goldco. It is set out in the fee statement that follows.
- Direct-purchase minimum. This applies when you buy coins or bars with non-retirement money and take ownership outside any IRA. Goldco's website lists $10,000, according to Goldco's website at the time of writing; confirm current terms.
Gold IRA Fees
The required minimum purchase at Goldco to start a gold IRA is $25,000. Goldco’s preferred Custodian charges a flat annual account service fee which includes a one-time IRA account set-up fee of $50. as well as a $30 wire fee. Annual maintenance is $100, and storage is $150 for segregated storage or $100 for non-segregated storage.
Fees for gold storage and custodianship can vary depending on the company you select to handle these services (required by the IRS, as all IRA assets must be managed by a custodian). Depending on the Custodian, storage fees can range from $10 to $60 per month, or as a percentage of assets, from 0.35% to 1% annually.
Notice that the IRA minimum is a funding threshold, not a fee. You keep that value in the account as metals, minus the premiums built into the product prices.
Why Precious Metals Companies Set Minimums
Minimums are common among full-service precious metals companies, and the reasons are mostly practical:
- Fixed work per account. Opening a self-directed IRA involves custodian paperwork, coordination of a transfer or rollover, purchase confirmations, and shipping to a depository. That work costs roughly the same whether the account is small or large.
- Annual costs relative to size. Custodian and storage fees recur every year. On a very small account, those recurring costs would consume a larger share of the balance. A minimum keeps the fee-to-balance ratio more reasonable.
- Insured shipping and handling. Moving physical metal requires insured shipping and secure handling, which have fixed components.
- Business model. Companies that assign a specialist to each customer typically focus on larger orders.
None of this means a higher minimum is better or worse. It tells you who the company is set up to serve.
Planning Around the Minimums
Check what you could move
Start with recent statements from your existing IRA, 401(k), or other qualified plan. Note the balance, whether the plan allows transfers or rollovers while you are still employed, and whether moving only part of the account is possible. Our guide to partial rollovers explains how moving a portion works, and in-service rollovers covers plans that allow moves while you still work for the employer.
Think in percentages, not just dollars
Meeting a minimum is not a reason to allocate more than you intended. Many people decide on a share of their overall portfolio first, then see whether that share clears the minimum. Our article on how much of a portfolio might go to precious metals discusses the trade-offs. Precious metals can be one way to diversify, but they pay no interest or dividends and their prices can fall.
Factor in the ongoing costs
For an IRA, compare the recurring custodian and storage costs in Goldco's published fee statement above against the amount you would hold. The smaller the account, the more those costs matter each year.
Consider the direct route separately
If you want physical metal in your own possession, the direct-purchase track has its own threshold and its own costs, such as insured delivery and home or vault storage. See buying directly from Goldco.
If You Are Below the Minimum
If your amount falls short of either threshold, you have several options to research: waiting until a larger balance is available, buying smaller quantities from other dealers, or looking at companies with different minimums. Our Goldco alternatives overview lists other companies; check each one's current published terms rather than relying on secondhand figures. Goldco's website lists a $10,000 minimum for direct purchases, according to Goldco's website at the time of writing; confirm current terms, including whether it applies to each order.
